Park, Boyle win distance titles in Santa Clara

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — Park Tae-hwan of South Korea set a meet record in winning the 800-meter freestyle Thursday on opening night of the Santa Clara International Grand Prix.

He won in 7 minutes, 52.07 seconds, the fourth-fastest time in the world this year. It was just under Canadian Ryan Cochrane’s old mark of 7:52.18 set last year. Cochrane finished second in 7:57.19, while Ryan Napoleon of Australia was third at 7:59.10.

In the women’s 1,500 free, Lauren Boyle of New Zealand held off American Emily Brunemann to win in 16:21.73. Brunemann touched in 16:23.36 and Andreina Pinto of Venezuela was third at 16:24.16.
