Letter: Keystone pipeline is not the solution

The Columbian
Published: November 5, 2012, 4:00pm

I believe one of the issues that is on the minds of my fellow Americans is the price of gasoline. However, I also believe that there is a misconception of thought on the subject as it relates to the price of gasoline.

Actually, who is in control of our gas prices? The correct answer is the oil companies. Are there any free thinking individuals who actually think that these CEOs of the oil companies are stupid?

There is pressure for the approval of the 1,200-mile Keystone XL pipeline that would run from Canada to Texas in order to transport the Canadian tar sand oil to the refineries in south Texas. Now what guarantee do we have that this tar sand oil, after it’s refined, will remain in the United States? Surely, the oil companies are going to sell their oil and gas to the country that will pay them the highest price. Does China ring anyone’s bell?

I recommend that everyone read the Oct. 21 Columbian story “Texas landowners take rare stand against Big Oil: TransCanada has behaved like arrogant foreigner, they say.” TransCanada is the same oil company that wants approval to construct the Keystone Pipeline.
