CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Charlotte 49ers coach Alan Major announced that senior forward Chris Braswell has been suspended for one game and junior guard DeMario Mayfield for two games for violating team rules.

Major did not specify what team rules were broken.

The news comes just minutes before the 49ers were to open the season against Charleston Southern.

That leaves the 49ers without their two leading scorers returning from last season. Braswell averaged 15.8 points per game and 7.6 rebounds, while Mayfield averaged 11.2 points and seven rebounds.

It’s the second time Mayfield has been suspended. He was suspended one game in February after being arrested on a misdemeanor marijuana possession charge.
