BALTIMORE (AP) — Ryan Cook collected 14 points and the University of Maryland-Baltimore County defeated Eastern 70-52 Monday night in a nonconference affair.

The Retrievers (1-1) led 10-9 after seven minutes of play, but then Quintin Jones’ 3-pointer with 12:49 left in the first half sparked a 13-2 UMBC scoring run. The Retrievers took advantage of the double-digit advantage, never letting the Eagles get closer than eight points of the lead the rest of the game.

Cook also led UMBC with eight rebounds as the Retrievers dominated Eastern inside, winning the rebound battle 42-31 and outscoring Eastern (0-1) 44-20 from in the paint.

Brett Roseboro and Malik Garner each pitched in 10 points for UMBC.

The Retrievers shot 50 percent (14 of 28) from the field in the first half, including 3 of 8 from beyond the arc.

Second-year Eastern coach Nate Stewart served on the UMBC staff from 2006-11.
