Texas Southern defeats Louisiana-Lafayette 74-71

HOUSTON (AP) — Ray Penn scored 17 points to lead Texas Southern as it defeated Louisiana-Lafayette 74-71 in overtime Friday night in Tigers home opener.

Penn was 6 of 11 from the field, including three 3-pointers. Fred Sturdivant had 14 points and 11 rebounds. Omar Strong had 14 points and Kyrie Sutton had 12 for the Tigers (1-2).

Texas Southern led 29-19 at the half.

The Ragin Cajuns battled back in the second half, with Bryant Mbamalu and Elfrid Payton scoring all of their combined 33 points in the half. The game was tied at 65 at the end of regulation.

Shawn Long was Louisiana-Lafayette’s high scorer with 20 points. He also led the team with 13 rebounds. Mbamalu finished with 18 points and Payton with 15 for Louisiana-Lafayette (1-1).
