Camas finishes fourth at 4A state soccer

PUYALLUP — In the Class 4A third-place game, Camas lost junior Cassie Bourland with a concussion and, later, the injury-riddled Papermakers lost the match 1-0 to Tahoma of Covington on Saturday.

Within the opening two minutes, Bourland and a Tahoma player hurtled into each other — “you could just hear the craniums collide,” Camas coach Roland Minder recalled — and was carried off the field. According to Minder, Bourland suffered a concussion and was taken to a local hospital but later released to her parents.

Minder said it was the second time during this state-championship weekend that Camas has lost a player to injury.

Back on the pitch, Tahoma’s Tori Tappero headed in a deflected corner kick in the 27th minute for the definitive goal.

“Given all the injuries we had and given most of the teams we had to play towards the end,” Minder said, “the hard work and grit our players showed got them to where we ended up.”

Camas finished the season at 17-5-1.
