CONWAY, S.C. (AP) — Sophomore Quinn Backus had 14 tackles to set a Coastal Carolina single-season record as the Chanticleers overwhelmed Charleston Southern 41-20 Saturday to win a share of their fifth Big South Conference title in 10 years fielding a football program.

Coastal Carolina (7-4, 5-1) shares the league title with Stony Brook and Liberty, but advances to the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs based on the tiebreaker.

Backus, who now has 123 tackles, also forced a fumble and ended the Buccaneers’ first drive of the game with an interception. That sparked Coastal Carolina to three straight rushing touchdowns by Lorenzo Taliaferro (2 yards), Aramis Hillary (4 yards) and Jeremy Height (2 yards). Hillary finished with 115 yards on 14 carries.

Coastal Carolina’s Marcus Whitener added two third-quarter rushing scores.

However, Charleston Southern outgained the Chanticleers in total offense, 364 to 354, led by Malcolm Dixon’s 122 yards passing with one touchdown.
