Letter: Realize we can win if united

The Columbian
Published: November 18, 2012, 4:00pm

I would like to comment on the Columbian’s Nov. 10 cartoon implying that people voted for Obama because they want stuff. I define the stuff we want as Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and single-payer health care that covers all people like all the other 38 industrialized nations do.

I voted against Mitt Romney and the Republicans’ plan to cut these programs to pay down our deficit at the same time claiming that corporations and the wealthy needed more tax breaks. I am not wealthy and I would pay more in taxes to keep these programs.

Obama’s message of “We are all in this together” uses reasonable spending cuts along with asking the wealthy to pay a little more in taxes to keep these important social safety nets was a far better choice.
