BERN, Switzerland (AP) — Swiss ski star Beat Feuz is out for the World Cup season because of persistent problems with his left knee.

Switzerland’s ski federation says Feuz, who was runner-up in the World Cup overall standings last season, will not race this season.

Swiss Ski says Feuz returned to a hospital in Bern last weekend for treatment for inflammation and bleeding in his knee. The cause of the problem is still unknown.

The 25-year-old speed specialist has not fully recovered from surgery he underwent in March, days after being beaten out for the sport’s most prestigious title by Marcel Hirscher of Austria.

Following the retirement of World Cup downhill champion Didier Cuche, Feuz was expected to be Switzerland’s top medal hope at the world championships in February in Schladming, Austria.
