Talking Points: Not-so-great title tilts

What’s the buzz from the world of sports? Here are some items that will have people talking:

1

College football conferences can kinda blame themselves for the mess that’s about to happen.

No, we aren’t talking about the BCS situation.

We are talking about conference championship games.

Alabama vs. Georgia could be interesting in the SEC title game, and the Georgia Dome will likely be packed for it.

Can’t say the same for these dandies: Stanford hosting UCLA for the Pac-12 title, and Florida State vs. Georgia Tech in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Stanford gets a rematch of its 35-17 pasting of the Bruins on Saturday on its neutralized home field on Friday. Yipee!

Then you have what’s likely to be a Florida State romp in Charlotte, N.C., over a Georgia Tech team that “earned” its spot in the title game because the two teams above them in the division either are or are about to have NCAA sanctions placed upon them. Double yipee!

The Seattle Seahawks lost exactly the kind of game Sunday they have to find a way to win if they’re going to reach the playoffs, and instead fell to 6-5.

“We know we’re a hell of a team at home,” defensive tackle Red Bryant told The Seattle Times. “But in the National Football League, you have to be able to win tough games on the road. So far this year, that’s a part of our game we haven’t been to translate just yet.”

From ESPN sports business reporter Darren Rovell on Twitter on Sunday:

“In a 7 year period (2008-2015), Auburn will have paid Tommy Tuberville & Gene Chizik a total of $12.6M not to coach.”
