Local police officers will donate their time to help a group of local elementary school-aged kids shop for Christmas presents for themselves and their families at a special event during the second week of December.

The second annual Shop With a Cop event is scheduled to take place at the Woodland Walmart Supercenter at 9 a.m. Dec. 8.

Woodland Police Chief Rob Stephenson said he expects officers from Kalama, Woodland, Ridgefield and La Center to take part in the event.

Kids participating in the program are chosen from a list provided by their schools.

The Walmart Foundation has provided a grant of $3,500 and other donors to the event include General Mills.

Each child is given $100 to spend, so the number of kids that can benefit from the program is based on the amount of money available. Current donations total $4,439.88 and event organizers hope to raise more.

Anyone wishing to help can leave their donations at the Kalama, Woodland, Ridgefield or La Center police departments, but checks should be made out to the Woodland Police Department, with “Shop for a Cop” written in the note section.
