ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) — Gervinho rallied to win the $100,000 Zuma Beach Stakes by a half-length at Santa Anita on Monday after losing his footing momentarily approaching the quarter pole.

Ridden by Rafael Bejarano, Gervinho ran one mile on the turf in 1:34.59 and paid $4.20, $2.60 and $2.20 as the even-money favorite.

“I thought he was going to go down,” Bejarano said. “He slipped and it threw me sideways, but he gave me a great kick through the stretch.”

Gervinho was named for the soccer player on Arsenal, the favorite English Premier League team of owner Keith Brackpool, chairman of the California Horse Racing Board. Brackpool said he would consider running Gervinho in the Breeders’ Cup Turf next month at Santa Anita.
