COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — Evan Lysacek’s competitive comeback is on hold after the Olympic figure skating champion dropped out of Skate America because of a groin injury.

U.S. Figure Skating announced the withdrawal Wednesday. Lysacek will be replaced by Armin Mahbanoozadeh, who was fourth at last year’s U.S. Figure Skating Championships.

Skate America was to be Lysacek’s first competition since he won gold at the Vancouver Games, the first U.S. man to win the Olympic title since Brian Boitano in 1988. Lysacek is not currently assigned to any other Grand Prixs, meaning his competitive debut may not come until the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in January.

In training the last year, Lysacek made his comeback official in August. He is aiming for a spot on the U.S. team at the 2014 Sochi Olympics.
