Panthers looking to regroup after dismal season

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pitt guard Tray Woodall says he expects to leave the Big East the same way he came in: with the Panthers winning a conference title.

The winningest program in the Big East over the last decade slumped to a 22-17 record last year and missed the NCAA tournament for the first time under coach Jamie Dixon. A lingering abdominal injury to Woodall and a roster loaded with freshmen sent the Panthers into a freefall they didn’t climb out of until the postseason, when they won the College Basketball Invitational.

The Panthers lost star guard Ashton Gibbs to graduation but have added 7-foot freshman center Steven Adams and Central Michigan transfer Trey Zeigler. Dixon says Pitt is as deep as he can remember and believes the program is in good shape as it prepares to transition to the ACC next fall.
