MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Former cyclist Matt White has quit as director of an Australian pro cycling squad after saying he was involved in doping while riding with Lance Armstrong’s U.S. Postal Service team.
White was the team director of Orica-GreenEDGE. He also resigned as Cycling Australia’s professional men’s road coordinator and team selector.
He released a statement in which he acknowledged his actions: “I am sad to say that I was part of a team where doping formed part of the team’s strategy, and I too was involved in that strategy.”
GreenEDGE expressed support for White.
His announcement follows revelations by Australia’s Fairfax Media that White was the anonymous “Rider 9” mentioned in a U.S. Anti-Doping Agency affidavit from former Armstrong teammate Floyd Landis regarding performance-enhancing drug use.
