HAMPTON, Va. (AP) — Jeremiah Schwartz rushed for 116 yards and two touchdowns to lead Hampton to a 28-14 victory against Norfolk State in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game Saturday.

The win allowed Hampton (1-4, 1-2) to avoid its first 0-5 start since 1991. The Pirates have won eight in a row at home against the Spartans.

The Pirates’ defense harassed Norfolk State quarterback Jake Basmagian into throwing four interceptions, one of which Delbert Tyler returned 10 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter. Lyndell Gibson intercepted Basmagian twice, including one in the fourth quarter that set the Pirates up on Norfolk State’s 17-yard line. Schwartz scored on rushing plays of 10 and 1 yards.

Basmagian finished the game 25 of 39 for 197 yards and one touchdown. The Spartans fumbled three times, losing one.

Norfolk State (2-5, 0-4 MEAC) has lost five in a row.
