Denny Heck will kick off campaign with event

Congressional candidate Denny Heck will hold a campaign kick-off event today at 1 p.m. at the Clark County Vocational Skills Center, 12000 N.E. 28th St. in Vancouver.

Heck, an Olympia Democrat, is a former state legislator from Clark County and the founder of TVW, the state government and public affairs TV channel. He is one of five Democrats and four Republicans who are running to succeed U.S. Rep. Brian Baird in the 3rd Congressional District.

Steigerwald refuge seeks volunteer trail stewards

The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service is hoping to train volunteers who will interact with visitors walking a new trail through the Steigerwald Lake National Wildlife Refuge

Refuge personnel will host a volunteer training session for the new trail stewards program on Saturday, March 6. The training will begin at Jemtegaard Middle School at 9 a.m. and last until about 2 p.m.

Lunch will be provided.

School board announces a meeting for Saturday

The Battle Ground district school board will hear updates on federal stimulus-funded capital projects and a Web site and logo redesign when it meets at 9 a.m. Saturday.

There also will be a report on the district’s standardized test scores for 2009 and resulting federal sanctions, followed by a work session to review board policies.

The board will meet in the CASEE-A board room, 11104 N.E. 149th St.

Big dreams and Big Al’s — a match made in heaven?

From 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday, the Dream Big Community Center will hold a fundraiser at Big Al’s Bowling Center in east Vancouver.

Dream Big is a startup nonprofit agency that’s focused on improving the lives of needy youth in Clark County. Mention Dream Big when you pay your tab, and Big Al’s will donate 10 percent to Dream Big. And if you outbowl Dream Big’s executive director, Nathan Webster, you’ll win a special prize.
