Cascade Park — Vancouver resident Jennifer Baker and Peggy, a female golden retriever, crossed the stage during the graduation ceremony on Oct. 7 at Guide Dogs of the Desert, a guide dog breeding and training center near Palm Springs, Calif. Baker previously had a guide dog, so she and Peggy trained only 14 days at the at the campus, rather than the customary 28 days. She learned to walk with Peggy in residential areas, negotiate heavily traveled areas with traffic, cross streets, ride buses and light rail, use stairways, elevators, escalators and maneuver through crowded restaurants and shopping malls and airport security.
