Letter: Context can define a quote

The Columbian

Oh my, context, context, context. Here is the full quote of what President Obama said at the U.N. recently, “The future must not belong to those who slander the prophet of Islam. But to be credible, those who condemn that slander must also condemn the hate we see in the images of Jesus Christ that are desecrated, or churches that are destroyed, or the Holocaust that is denied.”

Why some, like Terry G. Popravak Sr., in his letter of Oct. 10, “Troubled by Obama’s actions,” would quote the first sentence only, out of context, is beyond me. And more than a little sad.
