BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. (AP) — Lucas Beatty threw for a career-high four touchdowns as Gardner-Webb pulled away from Virginia Military Institute for a 38-7 win Saturday.

The Runnin’ Bulldogs, coming off a 41-10 loss to Stony Brook, snapped a four-game Big South Conference losing streak dating back to last season.

Gardner-Webb (2-6, 1-2) trailed 7-3 when it scored 35 unanswered points, sparked by Beatty’s 3-yard TD pass to Kenny Cook with 1:07 left in the first half.

Beatty then threw for three more TDs in a four-touchdown third quarter as Gardner-Webb held the Keydets to just seven yards of total offense (minus-22 rushing) in the period.

Cook and Demarcus White had two touchdown receptions apiece.

VMI (2-6, 1-3) took its only lead after Eric Kordenbrock threw an 80-yard touchdown pass to James Rogers on the Keydets’ first play of the second quarter.

The Runnin’ Bulldogs have beaten VMI nine of 10 times since 2003.
