ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) — Red Sun edged even-money favorite Ryehill Dreamer by a neck to win the $65,000 Lure Stakes at Santa Anita on Sunday.
Ridden by Rafael Bejarano, Red Sun ran one mile on the downhill turf course in 1:34.03 and paid $5.80, $2.80 and $2.20.
Ryehill Dreamer returned $2.60 and $2.10, while Temple’s Door was another 2 1/2 lengths back in third and paid $2.60 to show.
“I had to be on the lead with my horse,” said Bejarano, who won for the sixth time in seven rides on Red Sun. “I knew there was going to be a little speed on the outside so I had to use my horse in the beginning, but after that I was able to relax. When I saw the favorite was coming next to me, I tried to save as much ground as I could and let my horse go with him. This horse always runs well with me.”
The victory, worth $52,200, increased Red Sun’s career earnings to $280,188, with six wins in 11 starts.
