HOUSTON (AP) — Reliant Stadium has installed removable AstroTurf to be used for non-NFL events.

The retractable roof stadium has had removable natural grass since it opened in 2002. The Texans will continue to play on the natural grass. The AstroTurf will be used for other events such as high school and college football games.

Mark Miller, general manager of SMG-Reliant Park says: “we’re trying to save the natural grass field for the NFL so it will stay in better condition, and yet we’re trying to generate new revenue.”

Reliant officials will try to lure the Texas state high school football championships to Houston because of the move. The games haven’t been held in Houston since 2008 because the natural grass would have been damaged by playing multiple games on it.
