Washougal -- This summer, the Washougal Fraternal Order of Eagles No. 4390 more than doubled the amount it raised last summer for local veterans and the Vancouver Campus of the Portland VA Medical Center. Members raised $5,084 through raffles, potluck donations, game donations and individual donations. In addition, Camas Transmission and Grocery Outlet donated to the cause. For more than a century, the club's guiding principle -- "People helping people" -- hasn't changed. Funds were spent at local businesses to provide patients at the VA's liver/kidney transplant unit with washcloths, all-day bus passes. Funds also paid for 20,000 bottles of water for liver transplant patients who cannot use tap water, and coffee, creamer, sugar, personal hygiene and cleaning products for homeless vets placed in housing. One Eagles member knitted lap blankets for vets.
