Letter: Herrera Beutler's ideas make sense
Wednesday, October 31, 2012
Somebody in government is finally talking sense regarding our forests. I'm referring to Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler's press release in which she criticized the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for more than doubling the amount of land designated as critical habitat for the Northern Spotted Owl. The Spotted Owl continues to decline in numbers primarily because of competition with the aggressive Barred Owl.
As she points out, our Northwest forests are in danger of an increased threat of wildfire due to policies of the USFWS. It's time to let the loggers go in and clear out the excessive fuel buildup. We need jobs here in the Pacific Northwest, not wildfires.
