Prep notebook: Local teams win academic state titles

Three Clark County teams have been crowned academic state championships for their classifications this fall.

Hockinson can boast of two state championships.

The Hockinson volleyball team, which will play Tuesday for a berth in the district tournament, earned the Class 2A academic state championship with a 3.773 team grade point average. The Hawks are coached by Holly Rodriguez.

The Hawks’ girls swimming team also earned a state title with a 3.860 GPA. The swimmers are coached by Mike Bemis.

Bemis coached a pair of academic state champions this fall. He also coached the Seton Catholic girls swim team, which won the 1A academic state title with a 3.598 GPA.

Games on web

Fans who can’t hit the road with their favorite high school football team can listen on the web this weekend.

Local broadcaster Carl Click will provide play-by-play coverage of Friday’s game between Union and Graham-Kapowsin at 7 p.m. at www.carlclick.com.

Fans can also tune it on Saturday to listen to the Mountain View vs. Marysville-Pilchuck game at 7 p.m.

Honor for Becker

King’s Way Christian footbal player Jay Becker was selected the WIAA state boys athlete of the week for Class 1A last week.

Becker produced 653 all-purpose yards and nine touchdowns in a 66-64 victory over Lake Quinault on Oct. 20.

He was 12-for-20 passing for 296 yards and four scores. He rushed for 434 yards and four touchdowns. Becker also caught two passes for 14 yards and another score.
