Talking Points: It’s just one game, WSU fans

The first weekend of college football is nearly in the books, and while we come not to praise the Washington State Cougars, we also come not to bury them.

WSU was pitiful in a 30-6 loss to Brigham Young, turning in an embarrassing performance in its first game under Mike Leach.

Yet, in an effort to avoid panic from Cougar fans, allow us to recall Chip Kelly’s coaching debut at Oregon in 2009.

In their first game under Kelly, the Ducks amassed six first downs in a 19-8 loss to Boise State. They capped that with running back LeGarrette Blount punching a Broncos player and confronting BSU fans.

Since that inauspicious debut, Kelly is 35-5 with three conference titles.

We don’t expect Leach to have that level of success in Pullman, but the point is this: Things can get better.

Going into Saturday night’s game, the Lo$ Angele$ Dodger$ were 2-5 since their blockbuster trade with Boston.

Adding Adrian Gonzalez, Carl Crawford, Josh Beckett and others gave Lo$ Angele$ a total of $181 million in guaranteed contracts for next year. As any Red Sox fan could have told them, the players in question aren’t worth it.
