METAIRIE, La. (AP) — Drew Brees is confident the Saints can replicate Sean Payton’s record-breaking offense to an extent.

Yet the star quarterback has also appreciates that the mastermind of the schemes that have suited him so well won’t be around, and that offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael Jr. will have to make his own gut decisions and adjustments.

Carmichael gained experience calling plays last season after Payton broke his leg, and the Saints thrived, but Payton still had oversight.

The Saints open the regular season Sunday at home against Washington.

Redskins coach Mike Shanahan says he expects New Orleans’ offense remain effective because the system has been in place six seasons and most key players are back.

Payton is serving his season-long suspension in connection with the NFL’s bounty investigation.
