SAN DIEGO (AP) — Colin Lockett’s 96-yard kickoff return was San Diego State’s third touchdown in a span of 2:45 in the third quarter and the Aztecs overwhelmed Army 42-7 Saturday night.

Walter Kazee scored twice in the first half for the Aztecs (1-1), who bounced back from an opening loss at Washington.

SDSU coach Rocky Long returned to conventional thinking a week after raising eyebrows by trying for two two-point conversions rather than PATs — both failed — and going for it on fourth down rather than trying a late field goal against Washington. Chance Marden made all six PATs against Army, although he missed both of his field goal attempts, from 40 and 37 yards.

It was a dreadful opener for Army, which is trying to bounce back from a 3-9 record in 2011. Trent Steelman was intercepted twice and lost a fumble, with two of the turnovers setting up Aztecs scores.
