Hessonite, Lubash win stakes at Belmont Park

NEW YORK (AP) — Hessonite and Lubash won the $150,000 stakes for New York breds Sunday over the soggy turf at Belmont Park.

Hessonite, the 3-5 favorite, captured a third straight state bred stakes with a 5 1/4-length victory over Freedom Rings in the John Hettinger for fillies and mares. Ramon Dominguez rode for trainer David Donk as the 4-year-old won for the eighth time in 16 starts. She paid $3.20 to win. The time was 1:52.12 for the 1 1/8 miles over the course rated yielding.

Lubash held off Compliance Officer, the 2-1 favorite, by a head in the Ashley T. Cole for his seventh win in 22 starts. Jose Lezcano was aboard for trainer Christophe Clement as the 5-year-old covered the same distance in 1:53.27. Lubash paid $6.60 to win.
