Letter: Covering of coal trains vital

The Columbian
Published: September 19, 2012, 5:00pm

When I heard on the news that coal cars would not be covered, I said to myself: “Yes, they must be.” We don’t want to stop shipping coal by train. But if the coal export industry refuses to cover the cars, I think there will be black dust blowing off the coal. They simply need to cover each car with a heavy canvas tarp and strap it down tight. I say canvas, because it will conform and last longer than plastic. They might have to weld some hooks on the outside of the cars in order to do the job right. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure this out, or to know that coal must be covered.
