FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — New York Jets quarterbacks coach Matt Cavanaugh says having Tim Tebow as the backup has been “a learning experience” and predicts a “successful” year for starter Mark Sanchez.

Cavanaugh, addressing the media Thursday for the first time this season, had no concerns about how Sanchez would handle the arrival of Tebow when the Jets traded for the popular backup in March. He says Sanchez knows he’s “a damn good quarterback and he welcomed Tim.”

Cavanaugh used the wildcat at times with LeSean McCoy when he was the offensive coordinator at the University of Pittsburgh, but says Tebow adds a different dimension to the Jets’ offense.

He has told Sanchez to not focus on stats: “Just win, Mark, and everybody will recognize you as a great quarterback.”
