LONDON (AP) — Former England captain John Terry has quit international soccer before his Football Association hearing on racism allegations.
Despite being cleared in court of racially abusing Queens Park Rangers defender Anton Ferdinand during a Premier League match last year, Terry was due to face an FA charge in the next few days. The Chelsea defender was fired as captain in February but was allowed to continue playing for England.
Terry said late Sunday in a statement released by his management group that “in pursuing charges against me where I have already been cleared in a court of law,” the FA has “made my position with the national team untenable.”
Terry played 78 matches for England, scoring six goals, after making his debut in 2003 against Serbia and Montenegro.
