Letter: Obstructionism punished veterans

The Columbian
Published: September 25, 2012, 5:00pm

On Sept. 19, Republican Senators blocked legislation designed to help veterans get jobs. The bill, containing provisions to help the more than one-in-four veterans without a job, was supported by every Democrat and opposed by all but five Senate Republicans.

Republicans pointed to the deficit to explain their vote yet continue to support maintaining tax loopholes for the very rich. Don’t we owe more than rhetorical pats on the back to our wounded heroes?

I am proud of our two Washington senators who voted for this bill and especially Senate Veterans Affairs Chairwoman Patty Murray, D-Wash., who fought so hard to overcome Republican obstructionism.
