TORONTO (AP) — New York Yankees first basemen Mark Teixeira tested his strained left calf with seven at bats in a simulated game at the team’s minor league complex in Tampa, Fla. on Thursday.

Manager Joe Girardi said Teixeira, who played one inning of defense, felt good afterward and will participate in another simulated game either Friday or Saturday.

A two-time All-Star, Teixeira first injured his calf on Aug. 21. He returned Sept. 8 at Baltimore but aggravated the injury diving into first base on a game-ending groundout and has not played since.

Last week, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman expressed hope that Teixeira, who is batting .255 with 23 home runs and 81 RBIs, could return in time for this trip to Toronto.
