The leading rusher in Clark County touched the ball three times on Friday at McKenzie Stadium. That turned out to be bad news for the Evergreen Plainsmen.

Battle Ground quarterback Ian Humphrey threw for 372 yards and six touchdowns as the Tigers beat the Plainsmen 40-6.

Kevin Haynes, who ran for almost 900 yards and 10 touchdowns over the first four games, carried only three times for 33 yards for Battle Ground (5-0, 1-0) in a 4A Greater St. Helens League opener.

With the Evergreen (2-3, 0-1) defense focused on slowing Haynes and the Battle Ground running game, Humphrey turned the game into his showcase.

After overshooting two open receivers early, the senior finished the first half completing 12 consecutive passes, five of them for touchdowns. On the night, he threw for 372 yards and six touchdowns, completing 19 of 24 throws.

Trevor Ingram caught three of the scoring passes, all in a row as a 6-0 lead midway through the first quarter became a four-touchdown margin midway through the second quarter.

Ingram had six catches for 123 yards, all in the first half.

Jake Sachen caught six passes for 168 yards and the game’s first touchdown.

Justin Smalley and Manny Martinez also caught touchdown passes, and Battle Ground led 40-0 with 3:20 left in the third quarter.

Evergreen scored with 5:21 left on a 9-yard catch and run by Greg Allen from Kobey Eaton,
