Simon wins men’s 1500 in short track photo finish

KEARNS, Utah (AP) — Jeff Simon of Las Vegas won his first competition since being injured more than two years ago with a dramatic photo finish in the men’s 1,500 meters at the U.S. Single Distance Short Track Speedskating Championships.

Simon crossed the line with fellow competitors Travis Jayner and John-Henry Krueger, but Simon was declared the winner after a review in a time of 2 minutes, 20.377 seconds. Jayner was second (2:20.411) and Krueger (2:20.420) third.

Lana Gehring won the women’s 1,500 in 2:26.688, followed by Jessica Smith (2:26.807) and Emily Scott (2:26.891).

Robert Lawrence won the men’s 500 in 42.377, followed by Eduardo Alvarez (42.554). J.R. Celski crashed yet managed to finish third in 49.972.

Smith blew away the competition in the women’s 500, winning in 44.965. Sarah Chen was second (45.723) and Gehring third (46.011).
