BEIRUT — A leading Syrian activist group says more than 6,000 people were killed in the civil war in March, making it the deadliest month since the start of the conflict two years ago.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Monday that it recorded 6,005 deaths last month.

The anti-regime group reports on violence and documents deaths through a network of contacts in Syria.

The Observatory said the dead included 298 children, 291 women, 1,486 rebel fighters and army defectors and 1,464 government soldiers. The rest were unidentified civilians and fighters.
