ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — Craig Neal has been hired as New Mexico’s new head coach.

The announcement was made Tuesday evening by athletic director Paul Krebs.

Neal has spent the past six years as the associate head coach at New Mexico under Steve Alford, who announced Saturday that he was headed to UCLA. Players and fans have voiced their support for Neal in recent days.

Before coaching at New Mexico, Neal spent three seasons with Alford at Iowa. Prior to that, he spent eight seasons with the NBA’s Toronto Raptors.

The university says Neal will be introduced during a news conference Wednesday afternoon.
