SUMAS — The U.S. Border Patrol reportedly has one man in custody and is searching for a second armed suspect in an area along the U.S.-Canadian border where authorities believe agents have the man surrounded.

The Bellingham Herald reports the Whatcom County sheriff’s office was first alerted to the situation at a logging trail near Sumas at 9:20 a.m. Tuesday after the pair reportedly fired gunshots when border agents tried to approach them.

Abbotsford, B.C., Police Constable Ian MacDonald says the incident happened on the U.S. side of the border near Canada’s Huntingdon border crossing.

He says one of the suspects was taken into custody and Canadian police were told the second may have made his way into Canada.

MacDonald says police have set up road blocks and a helicopter is scouring the area on each side of the border.
