Astros RHP White needs season-ending elbow surgery

HOUSTON (AP) -- Houston long reliever Alex White will have Tommy John surgery on his right elbow next week and is out for the season.

The 24-year-old White left an exhibition start last week with discomfort in his elbow and was soon placed on the 60-day disabled list.

Also on Friday, the Astros designated right-hander Edgar Gonzalez for assignment to make room on the roster for pitcher Travis Blackley.

The left-handed Blackley was acquired from Oakland on Thursday. He was 6-4 with a 4.10 ERA in 28 games with 15 starts between San Francisco and Oakland last season.
