ZURICH (AP) — Equatorial Guinea could be stripped of a World Cup qualifying victory over Cape Verde for fielding an ineligible player.

FIFA says it opened a disciplinary case against the soccer federation after Equatorial Guinea’s 4-3 win in Malabo on March 24.

None of the Equatorial Guinea starting lineup was born in the African country, though FIFA allows players to represent a country if a parent or grandparent was born there.

FIFA did not specify which player may have been ineligible.

FIFA says “member associations are responsible to … verify if all requirements are fulfilled.”

Recently, FIFA imposed 3-0 losses by default against Burkina Faso, Gabon and Sudan for fielding ineligible players in World Cup qualifiers.

Equatorial Guinea trails group leader Tunisia by five points midway through the qualifying tournament.
