The U.S. Navy announced Tuesday the cancellation of ship visits during the annual Portland Rose Festival Fleet Week.

It follows an announcement by the Flight Demonstration Squadron, the Blue Angels, to cancel remaining 2013 performances, including one in Hillsboro, Ore.

Budget shortfalls due to sequestration are forcing military services to cut back on outreach programs in 2013.

The Navy also cancelled ship visits and a Blue Angels appearance at another high-profile Northwest celebration, Seattle’s Seafair.

“We appreciate the community’s understanding during these uncertain budgetary times,” said Rear Adm. Mark Rich, Commander Navy Region Northwest. “We will continue to find ways to engage locally, in keeping with Department of Defense guidance.”

A news release says the Navy believes there is value in demonstrating the capabilities of ships and aircraft, inspiring future generations of sailors and Marines. The Navy intends to continue fleet weeks as the budget situation permits.
