• Keep windows closed and locked when not in use.
• Keep furniture or anything kids can climb away from windows.
• Install window guards or stops to prevent falls.
• When using safety devices, don’t let children see adults bypass the safety locks.
• Teach children to play safely away from windows.
• Make sure you can easily take off window stops or guards in case of an emergency.
• Keep landscaping in mind. Bushes beneath windows provide a softer landing than cement.
• If a child falls, call 911 and don’t try to move the child if they appear to be seriously injured.
• When buying new windows or building a new home, ask about built-in safety hardware.

Becca and Jason Keen Cunningham are careful parents. They covered outlets, bought side-impact car seats and installed mesh between the deck and its railing so their three young kids can’t fall through.
