Winners of tour events in fall get Masters invite

AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) — The Masters has found a way to keep its field small and let in more PGA Tour winners.

The PGA Tour is going to a wraparound schedule in October. That means the tournaments formally part of the Fall Series will be part of the tour’s FedEx Cup season. Masters chairman Billy Payne says winners from those tournaments will get invitations.

The only PGA Tour events where the winner won’t get an invitation to the Masters are those held opposite majors or World Golf Championships.

The Masters will take only the top 12 finishers instead of 16, and the top eight from the U.S. Open instead of the top four.

Meanwhile, the cut will expand this year to take the top 50 and ties, plus anyone within 10 shots of the lead.
