Letter: Coal exports pose many threats

The Columbian
Published: April 11, 2013, 5:00pm

I moved from New York City to the Northwest to raise my children in a clean environment. The Columbia River Gorge is one of the most beautiful places on this planet. I was appalled to learn about proposed coal exports that will blanket dust all along the rail corridor. Mercury pollution from burning coal in Asia comes back to us, increasing smog, making our air thick, like Beijing pollution.

I love spending time camping and windsurfing in the Gorge. The coal dust will ruin our way of life, our health, recreational opportunities, and the local economies that depend on healthy natural resources. These foreign coal millionaires want to expand their fortunes at the expense of the health of the people, forests, agricultural businesses and tourism. They would pollute our homes to fill their overstuffed bank accounts with more money. No thanks.
