With more than 140 varieties of tulips in its designer garden, and the introduction of a “you pick” field where people can pluck their own bouquets, the 11th annual Woodland Tulip Festival is shaping up to be a success, said Benno Dobbe, owner of Holland America Bulb Farms.

“The tulips have never been nicer than they are this year,” Dobbe said. “The colors are beautiful.”

For more than a decade, Dobbe has held the tulip festival at his family’s Woodland farm, at 1066 S. Pekin Road.

But it’s always evolving.

This year’s festival — held this weekend and next, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. — includes an area where people can choose among 100 varieties of tulips and decide which ones they want to buy. The flowers are 50 cents a stem, with a 10-tulip minimum. Some two dozen vendors are also set up in a farmers market at the free festival.Although conditions were a bit drizzly early Saturday, Dobbe said the turnout was good.

The mild weather in recent weeks has been perfect for growing tulips, Dobbe said, and they’ve been coming on strong.
