NEW DELHI (AP) — India’s sports ministry says Olympic boxing medalist Vijender Singh has tested negative for banned substances after police claimed last month he used heroin.
The ministry says in a statement on Tuesday that a “full menu test was conducted, which included testing for psychotropic substances.”
The National Anti-Doping Agency undertook the out-of-competition tests at Vijender’s request after police in the northern state of Punjab claimed Vijender’s name came up during an investigation into a heroin haul worth more than $25 million.
Vijender, a middleweight bronze medalist at the 2008 Beijing Games, refused to undergo tests by police but agreed to tests by NADA.
Athletes are normally tested for recreational drugs only during events. Out-of-competition tests are conducted for performance-enhancing substances.)
