The northern loop of a popular trail at the Steigerwald Lake National Wildlife Refuge will reopen on May 1, the refuge announced Wednesday.
Most of the Gibbons Creek Wildlife Art Trail opened on March 29, nearly six months after a wildfire damaged it and closed the refuge’s main refuge entrance off state Highway 14. The northern loop of the trail is typically closed from Oct. 1 to April 30 to protect wintering waterfowl, according to the refuge. As the waterfowl head north to their nesting grounds, officials reopen the loop.
The main entrance to the refuge is located on the south side of Highway 14, just east of Washougal in the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area.
