BELGRADE, Serbia (AP) — Edwin Kitum led a Kenyan trio who dominated the Belgrade Marathon on Sunday, finishing first in 2 hours, 19 minutes and 33 seconds.

Eliud Kibet Kirui was second in 2:24:40, while Boash Mayaka finished third in 2:30:42.

The race was held in bright, sunny conditions. But the start was marred by a nationalists’ protest against a recent agreement between Serbia and Kosovo signed by prime minister Ivica Dacic.

Officials had said that security would be tightened following the bombings at the Boston Marathon.

Serbia’s Olivera Jeftic won the women’s race, finishing in 2:36:09. The result enables Jeftic to take part in the World Championship in Moscow.

Lidija Mikloss, also from Serbia, was second in 3:05:59 and Poland’s Diana Golek was third in 3:16:48.
