Letter: VA needs vast, rapid improvements

I watched on TV, on the Rachel Maddow Show, a group of men and women who said they went to the White House trying to get help in enrolling veterans so they can be seen by doctors. There is an ongoing travesty to the point that there are almost 1 million veterans still waiting for Veteran Administration assistance on their 2013 claims.

Also, when a veteran’s claim is finally approved after the veteran’s death, the back award will go to the spouse only. If the spouse dies before the back award is authorized, then our government keeps the money; the children who cared for their disabled veteran parents get nothing. According to the Veteran Administration there were 19,500 claims paid to living spouses after the veterans had passed away. I wonder how many veterans died and had no spouse to pass their rightful entitlement to.
